Semidiurnal tides on the Delaware River at Philadelphia have a significant impact on navigation here, with a twice-daily tidal shift of nearly 7 feet. During heavy Northwest winds, we can see blow-out tides that drop the river level to as much as 4 or 5 feet below Mean Lower Low.
Being a tidal waterway here, The Delaware River runs at about 2 to 3 knots downstream on the outgoing tide and about 2 knots upstream on the incoming tide. With that in mind, it's a good idea to try to time arrival at slack high tide to avoid heavy current at the approach to the marina, and to avoid any low-water shoals.
The following are tidal ESTIMATES to help in planning. (Always confirm tidal predications with official tide tables such as those from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
